Words Of Power

Post  Liv on Tue May 08, 2012 10:54 pm

The song begins low, a hum in my chest, deep as the earth. It has no words. It needs none. It is a call, a vocal method of tapping in to the power around me. I raise my voice, raise my head, raise my gift. Power in the land, power in the air. I call to it, singing out. Power of will and right, power of the land and those it invested its will in.
Remember.
Remember the will. Remember the power. Remember the strength.
Remember.
The air tenses like muscles bunching, ripples with power.
I call. Here. Here and now. Remember, here and now!
Come, here and now. Find the place. Find the power.
I reach out, reach out myself, calling.
And it comes. The power, the will, the great throb of what should be.
I open my eyes.
We are standing on a hill now yet, but it is much higher, a great green expanse, and overhead the sky is starry. A half moon rides high, smiling enigmatically.
I draw a deep breath. The air is spiced with loam and leaves, a sweet, cold, deep scent.
"The Land."

The hum in her mind grinds on to new pitches as Liv's power awakens whatever was slumbering beneath the ground. It gets so strong that for a moment she winces before steeling herself once more. By the time Liv is taking in the land, she looks the same as before they left the apartment.

I smile tiredly. "Welcome."
I watch my friends as they look about nervously. I can see the fear in them, even in those who bury it deep, deep down. That instinctive wariness, that tension in the eyes and the muscles, the stance. They feel endangered here, on an instinctive level. Fear runs below their thoughts.
Fear.
Long ago, it is said, before men learned the use of tools and became predators, they were prey. Their minds remember this.
Oddly, in this place I feel no fear, no bone-deep wariness. But perhaps it is not so odd. Kindred were never prey. Though our ancestry has long been lost in time, many of us assume it was something with claws and teeth. Something feline, perhaps. A hunter.
I take a step calmly, feeling the ground take in my presence.

I glance around, this place is odd, old fears, old instincts. this is not a place where we are welcome at least not as equals, the best we can hope for is to be unnoticed, that is what the instincts say but that is no longer truth, be wary be vigilant, and be ready, we were not born with claws so we made them. the beauty of the place is astounding it is almost painful to compare it to the world we know.

I raise my head, breathing in the air. Catching Djhuety's eye, I smile a tight, wry smile. Like me, he's moving easier here, more easy in his skin. This place is welcoming, a home, power surging through the earth, feeding something in us. He is bright in my eyes. Another time, I would turn to him, kiss him here.
I turn away. "They'll have heard the call. The folk will be here soon."
My words seem to hang in the air a moment too long. I can feel the power in the air, just waiting for me to reach out and grab ahold.

I sigh smelling death and decay, gunpowder blood and gasoline, i look up to the sky to me its the dark night before a schverpunkt assault or a tank blitzkrieg, the moon is red, i look down and defiantly spit on the ground as if any moment some angry god might strike me down i look at the others wondering what they see and feel for a moment i pity them the uncertainty of life, i fire a cigarette and start humming the time to rammsteins "mein land" smilling at my life and near immortality.

I turn sharply. "Keep your minds, keep to the here and now. If you fall to memories, they'll swallow you. If you fear enemies, the shadows themselves will grow the claws to attack. Be warned." I hadn't intended it, but power rings in my voice, and the odd looks in the eyes of those around me change a bit. Satisfied, I turn back to my work.
I wish I was not here. I do not want to be what this night may make me. I want to be the girl who likes to dance to rock'n'roll, the girl who sings for her supper and busks on street corners, the girl with a cute London flat who's living away from home with a bunch of friends. Said that way, it sounds so simple, so real.
I don't want this.
But I'm going to have it whether I want, or no. So I straighten my shoulders. Now for the Calling.
I raise my head, closing my eyes. I must give the Call that will bring all the Kindred together. It has no set form that I've known of.One Ard Ri called with a pipe in the past, another with a fiddle, another with a drum. Most like it's just a sound that lets our gifts work.
So. For me, a song. A song that can encompass what I feel. Something I can believe in with my whole heart.
A song I can put all my power into.
I search my memory. There are so many songs...
But then one springs to mind. I smile. Perfect.
Remember. The beat, the feel. I begin to tap my foot. Then I throw my head back, and I sing.
"Growin' up
You don't see the writin' on the wall
Passin' by
Movin' straight ahead you knew it all
But maybe sometime if you feel the pain
You'll find you're all alone
Everything has changed"
My voice rises high and clear, and the power churns.

"Play the game
You know you can't quit until it's won
Soldier on
Only you can do what must be done
You know in some way
You're a lot like me
You're just a prisoner
And you're tryin' to break free!"
I can hear all the instruments that the original song held within it, the rich brass and the drums and the sweet synthasizer. But the version in my gift has a new dimension, fiddles and flutes leaping with joy. I can feel my heart swelling, my gift unfurling with the power of hope, of resolve, of new paths to walk, new chances. With joy, I leap into the chorus.

"I can see a new horizon
Underneath the blazin' sky
I'll be where the eagle's flyin' higher and higher!!
Gonna be your man in motion
All I need's a pair of wheels
Take me where my future's lyin'
St. Elmo's Fire!!"

With joy, with the hope of generations it feels, I call out through the song. Now is our time. Now is the time to change things. This time, we can make the world better.

"Soon be home
Only just a few miles down the road
I can make it
I know I can
You broke the boy in me
But you won't break the man!"
We can undo old mistakes. We can right wrongs. All we have to do is come together. Come together now!

"I can climb the highest mountain
Cross the wildest sea
I can feel St. Elmo's Fire burnin' in me
Burnin' in me!"

I can feel my Gift pouring out, further than it's ever reached before, wild and swift as a river in spring. I raise my arms in the sheer joy of the power.

"Just once in his life
A man has his time
And my time is now
And I'm comin' alive!

I can hear the music playin'
I can see the banners fly
Feel like you're back again
And hope ridin' high
Gonna be your man in motion
All I need is a pair of wheels
Take me where my future's lyin'
St. Elmo's Fire!!!"

With the last words, the power surges up in one wild, crazy, beautiful rush. I'm laughing in the joy of it, urging it, higher and higher and....
and then it is done.
The silence rings in the air. I close my eyes. All about me, I can feel attentions shift.
I've made this hill a beacon once more.
Now we shall see what moths come to the flame.
I turn back to my friends, and smile. "Well. It won't be long now."

Liv's Choice of song to call them is both startling and more then slightly appropriate. it is nice to again be able to sit and feel what emotions a song is supposed to invoke, though in this place it is a little to sharp on the heart strings, as if a banjo's pics were being used on a harp. not bad, just different. when she finishes I smirk "Bravo I will admit I wonder who our first Answerer will be"

I smile slightly. "We'll find out shortly."
It is the water folk who arrive first; not surprising, as they are those who I am most closely tied to. The Siren Lady arrives, nodding to me. Her eyes are, as always, unreadable. I shudder slightly at her gaze. I remember all too well what it felt like to face her. The sancha of the grugach studies me with moss-green eyes, squatting on the ground. Three niads of surpassing beauty slip from the shadows, bow to me, and sit.
Then the Lord of the Straits arrives, the leader of the Selkie clans. He gives me a bow and a smile. But it's the lady who he's escorting that holds my attention. Lehana na Ishiata, the Mother of Clans. She who decides for all Dratsie. "My Lady." I murmur, and kneel.
Two long, strong hands are laid on my shoulders, lifting me to my feet. Lehana smiles. "You shall not bow to me, Kit." Then she kisses me on the brow. "Grandmother Ishk speaks well of you. One of ours standing here. Blessings upon you. You make Grandfather Otter smile today."
I smile. One of ours. It's childish of me, but those words do more than any gesture to lift my spirits, to stiffen my resolve.
"My lady. You'd call us here with rock and roll?"
The voice is laughing, assured, commanding, like the call of a silver trumpet off in the distance. I turn. Pale, graceful build, dark skin, eyes the blue of a new morning. Silver circlet, silver hand. Kind, wise smile. Nuada Argatlam of the Tuatha de Dannan. I know him for a good man, and a good leader, sixth of that name since the original who led his people in the world of men. I bow respectfully. "No other music has quite so much power." but before I have a chance to speak further, another voice cuts in. Bitter chocolate and smoke. I know that voice. "Oh, this girl will surprise you, Nuada. In many ways." I turn warily to the Puck, glancing between the two men. I bow slightly. "My lord Puck."
The Puck chuckles low in his throat. "Oh I am no lord to you, girl." He glances over the gathering crowd. "I am merely what I am, merely the Puck. Just an elf...for the most part." He sighs, then turns with a smile that's almost...wistful.
"I wish you luck, child."
Nuada, warily studying the Puck, nods. "I as well, river lady. I've heard good things of you. When you speak tonight, know that the Tuatha are behind you, if no others."
"Such gallantry." the Puck adds, all sentimentality of his gone in a moment. the Tuatha man ignores him all together, showing his wisdom once again. I've heard a great deal of his power. If he's behind me...
At my side, my friends shift uncomfortably, save Liam. I glance at him.

once some of the others move away I lean to liv to answer her questioning glance "I worried he would show," with a flick of my eyes in Nuada's direction "and not remember at least one from my home who died aiding him or his forefather." my voice is low to reach no farther then our group "I am glad he is still as noble as even the mortals like myself who know of him believe"

I allow myself a small smile "how many do you think will appear, this is mostly waterfolk right?" i can't shake the feeling that this is going to be something akin to a spark in a grain silo if we aren't careful. "there are still others if we are lucky?" i leave off that luck is a relative term at best, but it is needful that more show up.

Kiou held steady beside them. Though these creatures were nothing like she had ever seen, she was not surprised to seem them. The gods could take any and many forms whenever they pleased. So, seeing this many, and in different forms, was still within her realm of understanding.

"Water folk and wood folk, shapeshifters...for now."
And more are arriving every moment. In the heady half-dusk, their forms shift and sway. Eyes of every hue, eyes of green and gold, of grey and black and red and all shades of the rainbow gleam in the dark. The crowd swells, circling before us at the base of the Hill. Most I know. Some I do not. And all of them are watching. I can feel the power swelling.
"Who calls?"
The voice is deep and sonorous. Who has spoken? I do not know. It does not matter. I stand straight. "Livieantreach na Sruth. I am here. I gave the call."
The crowd shifts and murmurs.
"And why do you call?"
I can feel my hackles rising.
"I call because there is a change upon us. You all know."
There is a rumble of quiet assent in the crowd, soft words and grunts and hoots.
"And I call because I would speak. I have come to speak of-"
"Lies."
I turn on my heel. Men. A phalanx of human men. And in their center....
Slim. Pale. Golden.
"Adrianna." I breathe the name.
Behind me, the crowd shifts. The air thickens, growing hot, and as feverish as a sickroom.
Adrianna smiles.

Adrinna smiled sweetly at her sister. "You can leave now sister. I can take it from here. No doubt you are so tired from having to make such a useless call and all. Don't worry, I can instruct the others to simply return home; false alarm." The soldiers near her held firm.

Kiou turned finally happy to see that there was a chance she may actually be of need for.

"How did you get here?" I ask, staring at her in amazement. She shouldn't have had the power.....
But then my memory throws up ideas. She had been gathering followers, power....could she have found someone who could do what I'd done?
Around us, the greatest of the Kindred are slowly growing angry. I can feel it.

to Liv "say the word" i key up the gun but don't raise it, then i raise my voice "Adrianna A'byss you model your soldiers after the romans of old, if that is the case then Wait Your Turn To Speak, you will have your fair chance." my tone is cooly Civil but not friendly she is not an opponent with which one should trifle. Adrianna chuckled softly. "I have no interest in taking a turn. I aim to stop, not participate." Her gaze moved to Liv. "The humans will not stand idly by while the likes of the kind you side with aim to come together. Doing so will only put the humans under a rock that has taken the centuries to get out from under."

I glance at him, and sharply at the others. "Don't." I whisper. "Not yet."
She has clothed herself all in palest cream, and the gold of her hair shines and sparks like fire in the moonlight. I know what image she's going for, her all light, and me across from her in my black jeans and black t-shirt, my hair cascading brown-black down my back, as dark as she is fair. Light against darkness. Good against evil. Holy against infidel.
Nice try.
My mother's people are watching, tension singing through them. But they, like I, are waiting, though I can feel them husbanding their strength, raising their powers.
I raise my voice.
"These people are not your enemies. We have no need to fight one another. What we should fight is the deaths of our worlds. We're dying, both of our races. Dying of an old wound. Tonight, I hope to heal it." I hold Adrianna's eyes, so like my own.

I want to snarl but hold my anger in check, this is too important so I content myself with a cool look, sizing up her soldiers as well as taking stock of those who look as though they are ready to leave while others are ready to fight, be it us or them, talk about a storm brewing.

"You lie. You hope to sit in a throne made for another. And after you take that seat, you would aspire to conquer not this realm but the human one as well. Your thirst for control would know no bounds." Adrianna made no move to lose her sister's gaze. "So no, you hope to heal nothing. This is all nothing more than a power grab. A self fulfilling prophecy. They said you would be here, and capitalizing on that, you have come."

I can't help it. I laugh. And to my surprise, I'm not the only one who's amused. I shake my head. "I think you're reflecting yourself on others, half-sister. I'm Dratsie in half. We do not seek power. Dratsies don't go in for ruling or for intriuges of the court. The only war we have is with eels. It's not in our nature. And beyond that, I am a bard. I have all the power I need in my words. I've never needed anything but that. No bard does." I take a step forward. Guns rise.
"I want no power. I want an end to what is happening. My peoples, both of them, will destroy themselves if they continue to pull themselves apart. Don't you see it? Mankind is drowning in fear and anger and impulsive action. And Kindred-" I let my eyes sweep over the crowd. "They wither with lack of passion, with ennui and lassitude. The worlds themselves are suffering from it. The earth is being destroyed, and the Kindred lands are fading. We're killing ourselves by inches." Another step. "Adrianna. Listen. You and I come from both stocks." A few of her men start at that, staring at her. She didn't tell them that, I see. "We are meant to share the world. We always were. Together, our races are in balance. Seperate, we destroy ourselves. Don't you see?"
Around us, humans and kindred alike move uncomfortably. Whispers fill the air.

I feel like i swallowed something sour, adrianna's words are calculated poison and entropy, and some of the whispers are less then friendly in tone, some are scared but my eyes never leave the soldiers, my own gun beginning to thrum in my hand i need to dial back the power a little bit. I watch one of the soldiers is too pale, i can see the sheen of sweat where his gear doesn't cover him. If any of them are going to twitch it will be him. too bad he isn't as composed as the woman next to him, she could make hella seem warm and inviting

"See what? See how balance can be found by just letting the Dratsie have free reign of those they wish? Doing so just allows them to make us half-sister." She turned to address the men. "Yes I have dratsie in me, as she says, but what changes? My father was dragged from the human world to this one where he was made to fornicate with them." She pointed to Liv indignantly. "That is the result. Once done with him, they sent him back broken to the human world. So broken was he, that he never came back to reality. Think amongst you, how many sons, husbands, wives, children and elderly go missing without a trace? How many go missing like my father did only to come back broken and abused. We can end that cycle here and now." She turned to Liv once more as a renewed confidence glowed in the eyes of her soldiers.
